Mummies and Tombs: Why Build Pyramids (Discovery Channel, Kabelvision channel 26, 12 p.m.).
Pyramids are all over the world and they look remarkably similar, but not all pyramids are created equal. They had lots of different uses and this program profiles them all. The program starts at the beginning, in Egypt, where pyramids were houses of eternity -- tombs designed to protect the Pharaoh and his treasures forever. But when pyramid building ended in Egypt, it was picked up in Nubia, the modern Sudan. But the Nubians put a special spin on their pyramids and this program takes viewers to the exotic pyramid fields of Nuri and Meroe to reveal a lost world of pyramids.
Pyramids also have their gruesome side, especially in the hands of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, where they were used for human sacrifices. With the latest archaeological evidence, including recently excavated skeletons, this episode recreates the last day of warriors sacrificed in Peru. This episode even uncovers the objects used in the sacrifice rituals. But not all pyramids were associated with death. Here at home in Java, viewers visit a huge pyramid designed to take Buddhist pilgrims to another world.
