Sophie's Choice (METROTV, 8:05 p.m.) Starring Meryl Streep, Peter MacNicol, Kevin Kline. Directed by Alan J. Pakula.
Back when it was released in 1982, this garnered high praise for its earnest adaptation of William Styron's novel, detailing the relationship between a Holocaust survivor (Streep), her lover (Kline) and the young writer (MacNicol) who crosses paths with them in a world starting anew in late 1940s New York City. Streep was on the cusp of full-fledged stardom (post-Kramer vs. Kramer, The Deer Hunter and French Lieutenant's Woman), and won the Best Actress Oscar for a performance which is undoubtedly technically perfect. It's so seamless, in fact, right on in registering every bare emotion and in Streep even giving us a bit of Polish, that it becomes almost mannered. More than 20 years on, the movie as a whole seems a very serious, detached and not particularly captivating piece of filmmaking. But then it's really about that tour-de-force performance.
