The Killing Fields (MetroTV, 8:05 p.m.). Starring Sam Waterston, Haing S. Ngor, John Malkovich, Julian Sands. Directed by Roland Joffe.
Loosely based on a real-life story, The Killing Fields is a remarkable and deeply affecting epic film on the horrors of war in Southeast Asia and survival, as well as friendship between New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg and his Cambodian assistant, friend and interpreter Dith Pran.
In the chaos of the Khmer Rouge takeover of Phnom Penh the two friends separate. Schanberg and others are deported, while Pran stays. Captured and nearly killed for working with Westerners, it's Pran's struggles to stay alive that make this so incredibly powerful and gripping, like his horrifying walk through the remains of brutal massacres in the Valley of Death.
