BSD accused of polluting river

TANGERANG: An official at the Tangerang regency environmental agency office accused Bumi Serpong Damai housing estate on Wednesday of polluting Cisadane river.

Cecep Suhendar, chief of the agency's supervision and permit control, said household waste dumped in the river caused pollution because it was not treated properly beforehand. It happened because the housing estate's waste water treatment facility was out of order, he said.

Separately, BSD spokesman Donny Rahajoe denied BSD dumped its household water waste into Cisadane river. He also said that household waste should not be processed through a water treatment facility.

"We dispose household waste into Angke river after the waste is treated in an 11-hectare-wide water reservoir. This is conducted in accordance with the required environmental impact analysis (Amdal)," he told The Jakarta Post.

He said BSD's waste water treatment facility is only used to process its industrial waste and still functions properly. --JP
