Bridge c'ship for students
JAKARTA (JP): The Third Inter-University Bridge championship started here yesterday to find talented juniors to play future international events.
Thirty-nine teams are taking part in the championship. There are three events: men's team, women's team and pairs.
The Indonesian Bridge Association's chief executive, Amran Zamzani, said Indonesia had difficulties finding junior players to retain the country's achievements notched by senior players from 1987 to 1989 as the world's number five bridge nation.
Indonesia has missed some junior bridge championships since 1987.
The association's officials have been blamed for this because they did not pay enough attention to developing young players.
"The association's officials should not be complacent with senior players' achievements," association chairman Wiranto said.
The minister of education and culture, Djojonegoro, said he hoped participants would share their experiences to improve young players' skills. (03)
