Bridge collapse kills 1, injures 16

BOGOR (JP): One woman was killed and 16 others injured when an overloaded suspension bridge collapsed on Tuesday in Kampung Nusa Pulo, Bogor Tengah district.

The victims were among dozens of people who traveled across the old footbridge on that day at about 8 p.m., on their way to the Jami At Thoiriyah mosque to attend an event celebrating the birth of Prophet Muhammad, an eyewitness said.

When the 20-meter bridge collapsed, the victims fell three meters to the dam wall below.

Seventeen people were rushed to hospital. However, Siti Aminah, 30, died on the way as a result of head injuries she sustained during the fall. Five of the other injured were later allowed to return home after receiving medical treatment.

The bridge was built by the Dutch government in 1920.(21)
