Bridge champs go to HK event

JAKARTA: The winning and runner-up pairs of the just-concluded National Bridge League (LBN) -- Wolter Karamoy/Ferdie Waluyan and Taufik Hasby/Robert Tobing, respectively -- will travel to Hong Kong to take part in the Celestial Intercity Bridge Championship.

They will be the first Indonesian teams to take part in the event since 1998. Indonesia had its best ever showing at the championship back in 1987, when Bert Toar Polii led teammates to victory.

Bert, now an official at the Indonesian Contract Bridge Association, said the Hong Kong event was traditionally competitive, given that participating teams came not only from Asia but also from the United States and Europe.

The teams are scheduled to leave for Hong Kong on Monday, the day before the six-day championship begins. --JP
