Domestic sea freight from January to November 2010 reached 9.9 million tons, a 27.2 percent decrease compared to the same period last year, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports.
According to BPS data, Panjang, Lampung and Surabaya’s Tanjung Perak ports saw a 14.4 percent and 5.2 percent decline in sea freight during this period. In contrast, Makassar, Tanjung Priok and Balikpapan seaports experienced a 29.3 percent, 19.3 percent and 1.7 percent increase.
However, the director of sea freight traffic at the Transportation Ministry, Leon Muhammad, questioned the BPS data samples, saying it may have only been taken from larger city ports.
However, Leon said, a decline took place in international sea freight due to a weakening regional economy early last year, kontan.co.id reports.
