Boy shot in Jambi clash
JAMBI: A boy was accidentally shot when police fired warning shots to deter residents who were attacking a police station late Sunday. The unnamed 10 year old was shot in the abdomen and is under intensive care at Jambi hospital, a police spokesman said as quoted by Antara wire service on Monday.
"The Jambi Police deeply regret the (incident)... and apologize to the family and the public," Col. Bakaruddin said.
Police fired warning shots into the air because crowds were throwing stones at them, he said. Six police officers were also injured, he added.
The residents, which he said were from Olak Kemang village, attacked the Danau Teluk station after hearing that a fellow villager had died after being beaten while in police custody. The report did not mention why Imron, the detainee, was in jail. Four police officers involved in questioning Imron are being questioned by the military police, Capt. Bakaruddin said.
He added that residents had "misinterpreted" the reports but did not elaborate. On Monday, soldiers were seen guarding the police station, which had shattered windows and other damages.
