Boy accidentally killed in duel

JAKARTA (JP): A 13-year-old boy was killed on Saturday night as the result of a misunderstanding involving a man who got angry after being jokingly tapped on the back while watching a traveling carousel in Duren Jaya, Bekasi.

The boy's father, Taskim, said on Sunday that his son, identified as Rano Setiawan, was the victim of an altercation between the culprit and a man called Gafur.

"The man was very angry with Gafur and the two had been feuding," Taskim told reporters at the morgue of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

He said the man tried to stab Gafur with a knife, but unfortunately it hit Rano in the back as Gafur fell in his effort to avoid the stabbing.

Rano was eating noodles when the quarrel arose, Taskim said, adding that Gafur suffered only minor injury to his right hand.

Local residents managed to apprehend the suspect and handed him over to the police to prevent him being mobbed, he said.

Rano was rushed to Mekarsari Hospital in East Bekasi, but he died on Sunday at 9 a.m. (jun)
