Borrower's relatives mob Dutch expatriate

JAKARTA (JP): A Dutch citizen was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital after he was mobbed by a group of men on Thursday.

The man, identified as Ayf Welers, was rushed to the hospital's emergency unit by another Dutchman and an Indonesian identified as Fritz. Officers from the Army's Special Force (Kopassus) and Military Police accompanied them.

Fritz told The Jakarta Post that he and his two Dutch partners were mobbed when they went to collect money from a woman, later identified as Farida.

Fritz said the woman borrowed Rp 1 billion (US$135,135) from the two expatriates two years ago, and repaid Rp 700 million since then.

The three went to Farida's house on Jl. Kramat VI in Central Jakarta on Thursday to ask for the remaining balance, but were attacked by her relatives on arrival.

Fritz and one partner managed to escape from the mob and reported the incident to the Central Jakarta Police.

Farida was summoned to the station, but was released an hour later after the police questioned her.

No suspects were arrested as of Thursday afternoon. One man, who accompanied Farida to the police station, told reporters that she had an uncle who was a colonel at the National Police Headquarters. (04)
