Bogus officer arrested

JAKARTA (JP): West Jakarta Police yesterday arrested a bogus police captain for attempting to extort money from a motorcyclist on Jl. Daan Mogot.

Chief of the West Jakarta Police Detectives Maj. Ronie F. Sompie said that the 42-year-old man, identified as Sunarman, was apprehended by a police officer who happened to be passing the street.

"During preliminary interrogation, the suspect admitted to acting as a police officer and asking people for money," Ronie said.

He said the "captain" stopped the motorcyclist, identified as Yuli, and asked for her drivers' license before asking for money.

Sunarman -- a resident of Ciracas, East Jakarta -- said that being a police officer has been his dream since he was a boy.

"I'm proud when I'm wearing a police uniform," the father of two children said yesterday. (jun)
