Bogor mayor faces chronic problems

BOGOR: Bogor city councillor, Beni Mahyudin, urged the next mayor to tackle three perennial problems faced by the municipality: garbage, traffic and street vendors.

Beni was speaking after a ceremony to confirm three mayoral candidates. The candidates are the incumbent assistant to the city secretary Diani Budiarto, the incumbent director of Bogor tap water operator Helmi Soetikno and TB Soemandjaja, a legislator with the House of Representatives.

"The three problems have been going on for decades and none of the Bogor mayors have been able to solve them. They have only set up programs but failed to implement them," he said.

During the ceremony, hundreds of students staged a protest, demanding that the councillors end money politics in the mayoral election. -- JP
