Bogor launches cleanliness drive

JAKARTA (JP): Bogor has launched a campaign to keep the town orderly, tidy and beautiful.

A spokesman for the town's administration, Hari Harsono, said the campaign was aimed particularly at motorists and pedestrians.

Many of them simply lacked discipline, he told Antara.

A joint team involving the army, police and civil servants has been formed to implement the campaign.

In one recent operation officials seized a car being used to distribute alcoholic drinks and arrested 17 street vendors, five pedicab drivers, and 10 public transit van drivers for minor offenses.

Justice was swift for the offenders.

They were tried at a mobile court, and if convicted, fined and ordered to pay immediately. The fines ranged from Rp 3,000 (US$1.13) to Rp 7,000.

The authorities have also stopped hundreds of people for jaywalking at dangerous spots. They were not fined but told not to repeat the offense, Antara said. (04)
