Body found in waterway

JAKARTA (JP): The fully-clothed body of an unidentified man in his 20s was found floating in Banjir Kanal waterway in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Sunday morning.

According to a police officer from Tanah Abang police subprecinct, the deceased was found at 9:30 a.m. by local teenagers who were playing football in a nearby field.

The body was swollen but bore no signs of violence, said the officer, who asked not to be named.

"We found an identification card on his person but the photograph did not match the dead man's face," the officer said.

Police believe the victim may have died an accidental death after falling into the river near to where his body was found. However they did not dismiss the possibility of foul play being involved.

The body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

As of last night, nobody had appeared to claim the body, forcing forensic experts to delay the examination, a member of the hospital's morgue staff, Sodikin, said. (ind)
