BNI's ATM robbed in Bekasi

JAKARTA (JP): Bekasi Police detectives have not made any significant progress in their investigation of the theft of Rp 196.2 million (US$21,325) from Bank BNI's automatic teller machine (ATM) at Goro wholesale outlet in Pekayon, South Bekasi, an officer said on Monday.

"No progress yet. We're still investigating," Sr. Supt. Sutarman, chief of the precinct, said.

Agus Yulianto, 23, an employee of PT Swadarma Sarana Informasi, a partner of Bank BNI, discovered that the money was missing from the ATM box on Saturday afternoon.

Agus was carrying out his daily routine at the ATM at around 2 p.m. when some customers complained to him about the empty ATM.

Agus said that he became suspicious after receiving the complaint because he knew that the box was filled with Rp 50,000 bank notes earlier in the morning.

He then opened the ATM and learned that the complainant was correct.

At first look, he found nothing suspicious about the machine. But later, with the help of police officers, Agus found several places where the machine was damaged.

"Two boxes of money were missing from inside the ATM," he said.

Based on the data, the last transaction at the ATM was recorded at 2:36 p.m.

Officer Sutarman believes that the crime might have involved insiders since we found no significant damage," Agus said. (bsr)
