N. Jakarta cops nab 539 drug suspects

JAKARTA: North Jakarta precinct police arrested 539 drug suspects this year, most of whom were allegedly in possession of marijuana and putaw (low-grade heroin).

"Areas prone to drug trafficking include Tugu, Rawa Badak, Warakas, and Koja. We are keeping an eye on those areas," said police narcotics unit chief Comr. Gustari on Monday.

From the total number of suspects, he said, those charged with trafficking totaled 211, while the remaining 328 were alleged users. As many as 34 of the suspects were women.

"The suspects came from a variety of backgrounds, including civil servants, police and military personnel, and students. The greatest proportion are unemployed," Gustari said. -- JP
