BMG hosts seminar on geomagnetism

JAKARTA: Experts from Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and East Timor are gathering here for a three- day international seminar on geomagnetism, which began on Wednesday.

Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) head Ibrahim Gunawan said the seminar was aimed at expanding the application of geomagnetism both in the country and the world.

So far, data on geomagnetism has only been applied in sea and air navigation, geophysics exploration, telecommunication, mapping and research, he said.

The event is jointly held by the BMG and the International Association of Geomagnetism and Agronomy (IAGA).

IAGA President Charles Barton said he expected participants to share information on how the application of data on geomagnetism could support the development of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF). -- JP
