Jakarta tries out waste processor

JAKARTA: The city administration tried out the waste processing facility at the Bojong dump site in Bogor regency on Monday, said Governor Sutiyoso at City Hall.

If the facility, which uses ball press German technology and was imported from Germany, was proven effective and efficient the administration would order it in large numbers, he said, as reported by Tempointeraktif.

Although the dump can only accommodate 1,500 tons of Jakarta's 6,000 tons of daily waste, Sutiyoso hoped that the facility could process all the waste eventually.

Jakarta is facing a waste crisis following another dispute with the Bekasi municipality administration over the Bantar Gebang dump, which has been used by the capital since 1986. Residents in Bojong have repeatedly protested the opening of the dump for fear that it would endanger their health and damage the environment. -- JP
