Bintang to form party

JAKARTA (JP): Controversial politician Sri Bintang Pamungkas, who has was recently convicted of insulting President Soeharto, will announce the formation of his new political party today.

Bintang is braving President Soeharto's recent objection to the formation of new political parties. Soeharto said the existing three groups are adequate to channel the people's will.

In a press statement, Bintang said he will call his party the Indonesian Democratic Union Party. He expects to win the sympathy of youthful supporters of democracy.

Bintang was not jailed after his May 8 conviction because he immediately appealed.

"After completing the technical and non-technical preparations I have made since 1995, time has finally come to start the Indonesian Democratic Union Party," he said.

He said he is prepared for any political, legal or security consequences arising from the formation of his political party.

Bintang said he hopes his party will also win support from older Indonesians who crave greater democracy. (prs)
