Biggest statue for independence day

SURABAYA: The Westin Surabaya hotel has built a monument of national emblem Garuda Pancasila that is the biggest recorded in the Indonesian Museum of Record (MURI).

Measuring eight meters tall and 16 meters wide, the 800- kilogram Garuda statue -- made of coconut fiber, wire and light wood -- was put together by a team of eight people.

The hotel said in a release the project was meant to greet the 54th anniversary of Indonesian independence, which fall on Aug. 17. Street children were involved in the making of the statue, which will be displayed in the hotel's lobby starting on independence day. (edt)
