Bicycles rule the roads

In Amsterdam, the undisputed king of the road is not motorized vehicles, but ancient, human-powered bicycles.

A reserved lane on almost all major roads, the 300 euro tax deduction for those who pedal their way to work as well as the right to park just about anywhere -- including in front of the Royal Palace -- are just a few of many privileges bestowed on them.

With over one million bicycles in Amsterdam, and reportedly 30 million across the Netherlands, almost all transport in this city of brilliant diamonds, delicious cheese and, for some, marijuana takes place by bicycle.

As one hilarious travel guide puts it, "the best and the fastest way to get around in Amsterdam: bike. There are no rules. Feel free to use the sidewalk, one way streets... Ignore traffic signs, run red lights. No problem".
