'Beware of bogus officials'

JAKARTA (JP): As voter registration started yesterday, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja warned Jakartans of possible bogus registrars.

"Please be careful. Ask the officials who want to register you to show their identity cards issued by the official Election Supervision Committee," Surjadi said.

He said some people may pretend to be officials and then rob the house.

The governor also urged Jakartans not to hesitate in registering themselves as voters in next year's general election.

The voter registration period began yesterday and runs until May 20 during which time officials from the committee will visit every house in Jakarta to register the occupants as voters.

The officials will also register hospital patients and police detainees. Many of the latter are eligible to vote in the general election because they have yet to be found guilty of any crime. (yns)
