Better discipline can reduce stress

JAKARTA(JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja says a high degree of discipline among city administration officials will help reduce stress among the civil servants.

"A high sense of discipline is indispensable if the employees want to avoid psychological stress and tension," Suryadi told a group of civil servants and public figures in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, over the weekend.

The governor said city administration officials should stay on top of what's happening in their areas of authority.

He cited the example that city officials, including the district and subdistrict chiefs in Pasar Minggu should be able to see with their own eyes that the presence of street vendors and sidewalk traders is jeopardizing the lives of pedestrians, Antara reported.

"Because the sidewalks are monopolized by vendors, pedestrians have been forced to walk in the streets. They are liable to be hit by cars. And if such an accident happens, who should be held responsible for it?" Surjadi said. (bas)
