Bekasi destroys ecstasy pills

BEKASI: The Bekasi Municipal Narcotics Agency (BNK Bekasi) burned around 800,000 ecstasy pills on Saturday seized by police in a number of raids in the municipality.

"It (the incineration) is part of our war on drug traffickers in Bekasi municipality," said BNK Bekasi chairman Mochtar Mohamad on the sidelines of the event attended by the administration officials, the police and the military.

Mochtar, who is also Bekasi deputy mayor, called on all parties, including religious leaders, youth organizations, school principals, teachers and students, to take part in the antidrug campaign.

He also stressed the need for all schools to conduct urine tests on new students enrolling for the 2005/2006 academic year.

Head of Bekasi Police Sr. Comr. Edward Syah said that the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) recorded that four people died of drug abuse per day or 1,460 per year across the country. -- Antara
