Bekasi demands fees for dump

JAKARTA (JP): The Bekasi administration is demanding fees from Jakarta residents for garbage disposal at the Bantar Gebang dump site in Bekasi, Bekasi Mayor Nonon Sontanie said on Friday.

"The fees for the disposal of garbage are essential," Nonon said following the signing of a collaborative agreement on garbage control between the Jakarta and Bekasi administration.

"The fees will be a compensation for Bekasi residents, who are definitely affected by the garbage at Bantar Gebang, which amounts to 22,500 cubic meters a day."

"How much and in what form the fees will be will be worked out by the technical team. The team consists of people from both administrations."

Quoting Antara, Nonon said the agreement was so far at the stage of establishing the team, which will take people from both administrations' Health and Sanitation Agencies.

Garbage from Jakarta amounts to 25,400 cubic meters a day, of which 22,500 cubic meters goes to Bantar Gebang. Bekasi residents only contribute 700 cubic meters a day. (ylt)
