Before you make the journey home

To ensure a pleasant and enjoyable trip, travelers should make some preparations.

* Have your car checked out. This include the transmission and braking systems, fan belt, tires, cooling system, headlights and windshield wipers. Make sure your car's battery is in good condition. It is also advisable to brings some spare fuses and the car's manual.

* Make sure you take a standard car toolkit (such as wrench, screwdrivers, pliers), a jack, safety triangle, steel cable for towing, first-aid kit, flashlight and water. Make sure your spare tire is in good condition.

* Plan your trip ahead of time and prepare several alternative routes in case the main route is heavily congested. Don't forget to take a map as well as the phone numbers for police stations, hospital, gas stations, service stations, etc.

* Make sure your car's documents are in order.

Once the car is ready, travelers should also be prepared.

* Get a good night's sleep before driving.

* Bring along drinking water and food, especially pre-cooked or ready-to-eat, anticipating the possibility of being caught in a long traffic jam.

* Those traveling with children should bring along toys and magazines. Check your car's audio/video system, as it will provide valuable entertainment during a long trip.

* After breaking the fast, drink a lot of fresh water and avoid caffeine. Do not eat too many snacks as they will make you feel full and sleepy.

* Do not force yourself to keep driving if you are tired. It is better to find lodgings and continue the next day. -- The Jakarta Post
