Be polite

As a foreigner living in Jakarta, it has struck me that the native Indonesians are incredibly friendly, while the exact opposite is true of the expat community.

Many a time, I've walked down a busy street and seen one or several chipper young men or women call out to my expatriate cousins: "Hello, Mister!" only to be rudely ignored or, dare I say it, snubbed no matter how often the greeting is repeated. Surely this is no way to treat your neighbor. Surely this is no way to spread camaraderie across international borders.

When I am greeted by these selfsame friendly souls of Indonesia, I smile, nod or give a wink and say brightly: "Cheerio, Pak Chappies!" This response is met enthusiastically, because, in addition to acknowledging their greeting, I am showing them I am interested in learning their language as well.

I encourage all to take some time to think about this issue and -- please remember -- being polite is important.
