The U.S. secretary of state, Colin Powell, found himself even further on the margins of the U.S. administration after the most humiliating reversal yet in his Middle East policy.

Less than a month after emphasizing that the U.S. would continue to do business with the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, Powell was forced last Sunday to renounce him.
