Basic course on Islam in English

JAKARTA (JP): Sisters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a greater understanding of Islam for the English- speaking community in Jakarta, will be holding a six-week course, A General Introduction to Islam, starting on Feb. 28.

Angela Alhamid said yesterday the public lectures would be held each Saturday through April 4 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Pusdiklat Depkes building on Jl. Jebat Raya, in South Jakarta.

The series of six lectures presented in English by speakers from the Paramadina Islamic Studies Organization will focus on the concepts of tauhid (the unity or oneness of God), a profile on the prophet Muhammad, the Koran as guidelines for living, belief in the hereafter, rituals as the physical symbols of Islam and righteous deeds, she said.

Sisters, which currently has 40 English-speaking members from various nations, including America, Holland, England, Indonesia, Malaysia and Switzerland, was established in April 1997 as a support and information center for English-speaking Moslem women residing in Greater Jakarta.
