Bank customer complain to police

JAKARTA (JP): City Police have asked representatives of the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi city office to appear at City Police Headquarters to settle a complaint from one of its customers, an officer said.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday the request was made after a bank customer, Johari Bowo, reported to police that the bank, located on Jl. Sudirman, Central Jakarta, allegedly did not respond to his complaint.

Police will hold a questioning session next week, Aritonang said.

Johari was quoted by Aritonang as saying the bank promised last December to examine an alleged fake transfer order of Rp 270 million (US$110,204) out of the customer's bank account.

"Johari immediately contacted the bank in December after he found an irregularity in his bank account. The customer said he never made the transfer order," Aritonang said.

Johari, who had been a customer of the bank since 1982, thought someone forged his signature.

Johari also expressed regret over the bank's failure to contact him personally before approving the transfer order, Aritonang said.

Aritonang said police questioned two relatives of Johari.

A staff member of the bank, who claimed he knew of the complaint after reading news reports, refused to comment. (cst)
