Banggai experiences electricity cuts

PALU, Central Sulawesi: Electricity in Banggai, the capital of Banggai island regency, only functions for six hours each day, starting at 6 p.m. in the evening, due to the inadequate capacity of the power plants.

"This has been going on for the last 20 years because the old power plants can no longer produce enough electricity," the regency secretary Zakaria Kamindang said here on Saturday as quoted by Antara.

He further said that the power plants often failed to operate, leaving the town in the darkness.

He said the situation had hampered the administration's function as well as the economic activities.

Regency councillor Hasman Abbas blamed the administration for not putting pressure on the state-owned electricity supplier to improve the power plants. -- Antara
