Baliem reserve faces destruction

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The nationally protected forests of the scenic Baliem Valley are facing destruction as illegal logging goes on unchecked, a press report said yesterday.

The eight logging companies are protected by at least four officers of Jayawijaya police precinct and military command, Antara reported.

Officials of the Jayawijaya regency government claim to deplore the logging activities but say they have not received formal reports from the field.

The national reserve is located on the Jayawijaya mountain range about 3,400 meter above sea level. (pan)
