Bali has poor traffic record

DENPASAR, Bali: The holiday island of Bali has one of the worst traffic accidents in Indonesia with an average of one person killed every day, according to the police.

Brig. Gen. Hartoyo, chief of the Nusa Tenggara Police which also oversees Bali, said that Denpasar is now also developing traffic jams because of the increasing business activities in the city, including that which results from tourism, the Antara news agency reported.

Hartoyo on Monday launched the Zebra Agung 1994 Operation to crack down on traffic violations in Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara and East Timor, the four provinces under the jurisdiction of the Nusa Tenggara Police.

The operation focuses chiefly on Bali because the island is increasingly being used for international conventions, he said. (emb)
