Bahorok residents demand houses

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Local victims of the Bahorok flash flood are demanding that Langkat Regent Syamsul Arifin ensure that the government build them new homes.

The residents said the government had promised last year that it would build 400 modest houses worth Rp 50 billion for them in the Bahorok resort area, and they are now demanding that the promise is honored.

They expressed concern that no further news had been heard from the government since it first pledged to build the houses.

The Bahorok flash flood late last year was the worst natural disaster of the year. The flood claimed the lives of 157 local residents and tourists, with a further 82 people missing. -- Antara
