284 officials' urine tested

TANGERANG: The Tangerang municipal administration carried out a urine test on Monday on its 284 high-ranking officials in an attempt to limit drug abuse at the municipality office.

"The test was initially carried out on chiefs of agencies, bodies and offices in the municipal administration," said doctor Nuriman Mahcyudin, who led a team of four doctors in the test.

Nuriman, also chief of the municipal health agency, said such a test had also to be taken by all administration staff, beginning next week.

All civil servants at the administration must be drug-free, he said, adding that should any of them be found guilty of using drugs they would be fired.

Administration spokesman Herry Kusnadi told The Jakarta Post that the tests were held following the arrest of Suryadi, head of the Cipadu Jaya subdistrict office in Tangerang.

He said Suryadi, who had been fired as subdistrict chief, was found in possession of ecstasy pills when city police conducted a raid at a discotheque on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, West Jakarta, early this month. -- JP

Drug delivery foiled at airport

TANGERANG: Customs and Excise officers arrested two suspects and foiled the delivery of 53 kilograms of marijuana en route from Banda Aceh to Batam at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Customs and Excise chief Jusuf Indarto said on Monday that the drug had been sent by Azhari in Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh, to Permadi in Batam.

Azhari sent the marijuana on three occasions in different packages using postal services on June 18, June 19 and June 21. The deliveries were reported as Grupel root engravings.

"Officers in charge at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport's domestic warehouse became suspicious and examined the packages with narchotest, a device for testing drugs. The test confirmed that the packages contained marijuana," Jusuf said.

"Our officers then carried out a controlled delivery to Permadi's address in Batam but could only arrest Fadly and Deddy, who were believed to be responsible for the packages."

Both suspects are now in detention at the National Police Headquarters for further investigation.

Customs and Excise director general Permana Agung said both suspects had violated Article 78 of Law No. 22/1997 on drugs and would face 10-year prison terms. -- JP
