Australian broadcaster
In recent weeks some of your readers have indicated dismay at the planned cuts to radio and television services offered by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Along with making their views known to the public, they may be interested to know that they can avail themselves of the Australian democratic process by contributing to a Parliamentary inquiry.
Views for and against the public broadcaster are being canvassed by a Parliamentary Committee. They are particularly interested to hear from consumers about:
1. What would it mean to you if ABC services were curtailed.
2. What do you value most about ABC television and radio as independent broadcasters.
3. The contribution of the ABC to international trade and diplomacy and,
4. How the ABC compares to other international broadcasters. Submissions are to be lodged before March 10, 1997. Despite the short deadline, I suspect some readers, along with myself, will launch themselves at their word processors with glee. I too, value the ethical and intellectual approach taken by the ABC to world issues.
The Jakarta Post readers are encouraged to write, as letters from Asia would be highly valued. All viewpoints are regarded seriously, after all this process is a part of participatory democracy.
The address for submissions is:
The Secretary
Senate Inquiry into Australian International Broadcasting
Parliament House
Canberra 2600
Go to it and save this valuable part of the ABC!
