Audi has more options for hatchback lovers

Many carmakers have been reluctant to market their hatchback, two-door sedans here due to the poor response from consumers. However, Audi is not deterred by the fact and recently launched its A3 version -- a hatchback sedan.

Inspired by their success in marketing Audi A3 1.8 Turbo in January 2002, PT Garuda Mataram Motor -- the sole agent for Audi in Indonesia -- has introduced two versions of A3, the 2.0 FSI and A3 1.6L.

These second generation A3 has a sportier and more dynamic exterior design compared to its predecessor, which has been produced since 1996.

Despite the fact that it is a two-door hatchback, the A3 is actually a four-seater sedan. Compared to the previous edition of A3 1.8 Turbo, the new variants are more spacious inside as the wheelbase is 6.5-centimeters longer.

The A3 2.0 FSI has a 1,984cc inline four cylinder engine under its bonnet with direct injection that enables the car to perform at a maximum power of 150 horse power (hp) at 6,000 revs per minute (rpm). The maximum torque is 200 Newton-meter (Nm) at 3,500 rpm.

Audi claims that the A3 2.0 FSI can accelerate from 0-100 kilometers in 9.5 seconds while its top speed is 211 kilometers per hour.

This model -- with an average fuel consumption of one liter for 14.4 kilometers -- also offers the use of tiptronic transmission.

Meanwhile, the 1.6L carries a 1,595cc four inline cylinder, Single Over-Head Chamshaft (SOHC). The engine results in 102 hp maximum power at 5,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 148 Nm at 3,800 rpm. The model is offered with manual transmission.

Since many consumers have become increasingly aware of safety features, Audi offers the electronic stability program (ESP), antislip regulation (ASR), antilock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA), not to mention seat belts and air bags.

"The combination of the exterior and interior of the car, combined with its advanced technology, makes the compact car comfortable on Jakarta's congested roads," said Susilo Darmawan, PT Garuda Mataram Motor CEO. -- Primastuti Handayani
