Athletics meet to select SEAG hopefuls
JAKARTA: The National Track and Field Championships will be held in Jakarta from July 12 to July 15, with the sport's governing body PASI looking to select more athletes for the upcoming 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
To be staged at the Madya Stadium in Central Jakarta, the event, which also serves as the qualifying event for the 2004 National Sports Championships, will feature a total of 657 athletes from 30 provinces.
Around 52 athletes have began the first phase of the national training workout for the SEA Games in May, and PASI will expect more eligible athletes to be recruited through the national championships, which will see 42 events contested.
The next SEA Games will take place in Vietnam from December 5 to December 13. --JP

M'sia, S'pore bridge meet invitees
JAKARTA: Teams from Malaysia and Singapore will join the National Bridge Championship in Batam in Riau province next July, according to an official of the Indonesian Contract Bridge Association (Gabsi).
"They have confirmed they will send one team each," Gabsi deputy secretary-general Bert Toar Polii said here on Thursday. The tournament is scheduled to run from July 4 to July 13, with about 800 players being expected to turn up.
The annual tournament, which will contest events in the open team, women's team, junior team, mixed team and senior pairs, will also involve competitions between university students and matches between cities and towns.
The student competition, according to Bert, is aimed at finding young talent to the serve as the next generation of bridge players. --JP
