Army gets letter from commission
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: The Secretary-General of the National Commission on Human Rights, Baharuddin Lopa, yesterday revealed that he had sent a letter to the regional military commander demanding that the result of an investigation surrounding the deaths of three students during a protest in April be announced.
"I sent the letter two days ago and I'm quite sure the Wirabuana military command is handling the case in the best way possible," Lopa told journalists here yesterday.
The students died during a protest against an increase in transportation fares. An independent team found that 12 soldiers had "reacted excessively" in handling the demonstration which resulted in the deaths.
Lopa called on everyone to remain patient, expressing confidence that the matter would be handled accordingly. (20/mds)
