Arab solidarity
Arab League secretary-general, Dr. Esmat Abdul Maguid, is exerting unwavering efforts to achieve reconciliation of Arab ranks. These efforts emanate from a deep sense of responsibility, supported by patience and wise judgment.
The confiscation of Arab lands by Israel was a golden chance to reveal the stern reactions that reverberated throughout Arab and Islamic countries. The Arab League played a crucial role and led a successful diplomatic campaign that compelled Israel to freeze its decision.
The Jerusalem issue was a magnet that attracted the feelings of Arabs and Moslems and rallied their unified support. Hopes were revived for the convening of a summit and plans were laid out for long-term joint Arab work on issues of mutual concerns, not confining to Jerusalem or Palestinian issues alone.
Dr. Maguid, the most competent man to make these dreams into reality, was at the helm of the affairs. His current visit to the United Arab Emirates, whose leader, President Sheik Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, was the forerunner in calling for the reconciliation of Arab ranks, was the correct step in this direction.
Arab solidarity, limited or unlimited, on specific issues will no doubt boost the Arab stance towards the final settlement of the Middle East issue, which is hindered by Israel.
Arab solidarity will also serve the purpose of addressing the economic, cultural and political challenges faced by Arabs.
