Another E. Timor conference planned

BOGOR, West Java: A two day EU-INA conference on East Timor, jointly organized by Indonesia's Research Institute for Democracy and Peace (Ridep) and the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI) of Portugal ended here on Thursday, recommending that a further meeting be held in Singapore or East Timor.

Minister of Industry and Trade Luhut Panjaitan suggested in his closing speech that a new vision of Indonesia's former 27th province be built.

"An exchange of journalists or cultural campaigns between Portugal and Indonesia would probably work in promoting the new vision," Luhut said.

Jose Ramos Horta, vice president of the National Council for East Timor Resistance (CNRT), IEEI Director Alvaro Vasconcelos, UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) representative N. Parameswaran, Cornelis Lay of Gadjah Mada University, European Union Ambassador Klauspeter Schmallenbach and deputy secretary-general of Resistencia Nacional Estudante de Timor Leste Mariano Lopez were among those attending the conference at the Novotel Bogor.
