Another deregulation step

The government has announced new deregulation measures that are designed to improve Indonesia's competitive stance in the midst of the tide of globalization. This is to answer the challenge of consistently implementing the WTO, AFTA and APEC agreements.

Among the most noteworthy points are the steps that are being taken to facilitate exports. The requirements and procedures for obtaining certificates of origin for goods will be eased and the inspection requirement for goods destined for export will be waived.

It is hoped these and other measures will make our export products more competitive and thus have a positive impact on our balance of payments. Nevertheless, it must be borne in mind that boosting the quality of export goods is not an easy task. For that reason, any deregulation measure which lacks the drive and readiness of the officials directly involved in will have no meaning whatsoever.

The June 1996 deregulation measures reflect the government's sincerity in this matter, and, at the same time, provide some fresh air and a conducive climate for investment.
