Another case of law enforcement

Further to our earlier letter published on Aug. 31, 2001, we have now received a reply from Bandung attorney's office that confirmed the defendant Bambang Tjanadi bin Hasyim Tjanadi was sentenced to a one-year jail term by Bandung District Court.

But, to our surprise, the reply also said that the defendant had applied for a presidential pardon and as such, the jail term would be put on hold awaiting a reply from the President.

Shouldn't a convict appeal to the high court and subsequently the Supreme Court before he can apply for a presidential pardon?

During the case of Tommy Soeharto there were many comments from the legal sector advising that he should first serve his 18 month sentence before he could apply for a presidential pardon.
