Another baby found dead

JAKARTA (JP): A one-day-old newborn was found dead in a plastic bag in front of a Central Jakarta housing complex on Jl. Kepu Selatan yesterday, the fourth such case this year.

The body of the female baby was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for a postmortem.

Slamet Poernomo, a forensic expert at the hospital, said the baby was apparently killed before being dumped in a waste basket.

"She suffered a severe injury in the back of her head, indicating that she might have been hit by a blunt object or hit into something prior to her death. There were also vague choking marks around her neck," said Slamet, who examined the baby.

A police officer from the Kemayoran Police Subprecinct who asked for anonymity said a street sweeper found the baby and immediately told the district chief before reporting it to the police.

The officer said that police were questioning four people, including the sweeper, at the local police station. (09)
