Angry workers burn cars in Tangerang

JAKARTA (JP): Some 400 workers of a ceramic producer, PT Satya Karya Keramindo Indah, ran amok on Monday after the company failed to meet their demand for their annual bonus worth three times their basic monthly salary.

The employees burned at least two cars at the factory's compound, damaged a security post and shattered glass windows of the plant located at the Lyman Industrial Zone on Jl. Raya Serang, 25 kilometers from Sentul village in Balaraja.

The workers demanded the management pay their holiday bonuses plus allow a two-week holiday for the upcoming Idul Fitri festive season.

The workers threw stones at the plant and burned a Toyota Kijang van and a Daihatsu Carry minivan after the management did not show up.

Dozens of security personnel were hastily deployed at the site.

The workers pledged to continue their protest until their demands were fulfilled. (41/asa)
