Angie pulls out of Bali tournament

JAKARTA: National number one Angelique "Angie" Widjaja has withdrawn from the Wismilak International tennis tournament in Nusa Dua, Bali, later this month on her doctor's advice.

Angie's manager Virginia Rusli told The Jakarta Post on Thursday that the 19 year old was advised to put off her return to competitive play until Oct. 1 to ensure she is fully recovered from a left knee injury and surgery last November.

Angie, who won the inaugural Wismilak event in Bali in 2003 when making her WTA Tour debut, was expected to make her return at the event starting on Sept. 11 after missing most of the year due to the injury.

Virginia said Angie, who reached a career high ranking of 55 in 2003, would like to play in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in the Philippines in November.

"We will have to see how she does in October. Of course, if she was called up to play and she is fit, she would love to represent the country," Virginia said. -- JP
