Angie off to Europe for WTA tourney

JAKARTA : Angelique "Angie" Widjaja is back on track to take part in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour for one-and-a-half months in Europe, after three-months absence due to the injury of her left knee.

Angie will participate in the French Open in Paris, France on May 24, the DFS Classic in Birmingham on June 7 and the Wimbledon Championship, also in the United Kingdom, on June 28.

Deddy Tedjamukti, Angie's coach, expected her to pass the qualifying rounds of those tournaments, which would elevate her world rank to above 100, the coach said on Monday.

Angie was injured at the Qatar Total Open tournament in Doha in February. She missed six WTA tournaments in Europe, but took part in the Fed Cup preliminary round in India last April and brought the Indonesian team to enter the playoff.

She will be back in early July to prepare for the Fed Cup, several tournaments in the United States and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. -- JP
