Andi stuns Hamdani in Hamzah Haz Cup

JAKARTA: Little known chess player Andi Nurjabal continued his winning streak against top seeds in the Hamzah Haz Cup, which was officially opened by Vice President at the Tanah Abang Chess Center in Jakarta on Wednesday.

After International Master (IM) Danny Juswanto, it was FIDE Master (FM) Hamdani Rudin who fell at the hands of Andi, a 25- year-old National Master (NM) titleholder.

Andi, with a perfect 7 points from seven games, led Pool A by two points. Around 240 players are taking part in the tournament and are split into four groups. The top two players from each group qualify for the finals stage.

Meanwhile, Hamzah Haz emphasized the need to exploit further Indonesia's chess potential at international level given the fact that being a mind sport, chess was one of the only few sports that Indonesian people were potentially capable of beating the world in. -- JP
