Ancol to host fine arts jamboree

JAKARTA (JP): About 300 artists and craftsmen from across the country are to take part in the 10-day Fine Arts National Jamboree beginning on Friday at Jaya Ancol Arts Market in North Jakarta.

Spokesman Mukhrijul Adli of PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, the organizer and manager of the area, said in a statement on Thursday that the Sept. 25 to Oct. 4 event would be opened by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Marzuki Usman.

Like many other national events, the Fine Arts National Jamboree will be dominated by participants from Jakarta and other cities in Java, such as Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang and Surabaya.

Dancer Jemek Supriyadi from Yogyakarta, for example, is to perform a pantomime Membongkar Mayat (Digging Out the Corpses). His performance will be painted directly on to a three meter by 13.5 meter canvas by artist Cubung, Mukhrijul said.

He added that 300 items would be on offer during the event.

Resident traders at the Jaya Ancol Arts Market are to distribute all of the proceeds from the sales of their materials to people who have been badly hit by the prolonged economic crisis.

The other, visiting, participants plan to donate one-fifth of their revenue to the poor, he said.

It is not known whether visitors will have to pay an additional fee to the Ancol park entrance ticket to see the jamboree.

Governor Sutiyoso is also expected to attend the opening ceremony on Friday. (bsr)
